Wheat

Wheat accounts for around 60% of Australia’s total crop production and approximately 7% of the world’s 150 million tonne annual global wheat trade. The world’s five major wheat exporters are the US, the European Union, Canada, Russia and Australia which account for approximately 90% of wheat traded internationally. Australia is the fourth largest wheat exporter in the world behind the US, Canada and Russia. Australia’s wheat is primarily sold into the Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Barley

The second largest field crop in Australia, we produce more than 8 million tonnes of barley per year, grown over almost 4 million hectares. Of this production, 30-40% is graded as malt barley which makes up more than 30% of the world’s malting barley trade. Australia also supplies 20% of the world barley feed trade making us one of the key barley exporters globally along with Canada, the US and the European Union.

CHS Broadbent supply all major domestic users of barley including in feed and malt markets. We also export in bulk and containers across Asia and the Middle East.

Canola

Australia’s quality canola is highly sought after domestically and internationally for its use as a food-grade oil, biodiesel production and for stock feed. Australia’s canola production is on the rise producing more than 3 million tonnes annually making up 15-20% of the worlds export trade.

In 2019, CHS Broadbent joined the Central Office for sustainable canola, to ensure farmers delivering their canola to our storage and handling facilities have multiple markets to sell their canola seed into, including the EU biodiesel industry.

Sorghum

Sorghum is Australia’s fourth largest field crop grown over roughly 600,000 hectares producing approximately 1.8 million tonnes annually. The majority of Australia’s sorghum production is consumed domestically due to high local demand for livestock feed. Australia produces just over 2.5% of the global sorghum crop, but accounts for more than 5% of global sorghum exports. The most common uses for sorghum include livestock feed, alcoholic beverage production such as China’s popular Baijiu liquor and ethanol production. Only 5% of the world sorghum trade is used for food.

CHS Broadbent is consistently one of Australia's largest exporters of sorghum.

Pulses

CHS Broadbent buy and sell a range of pulses including chickpeas, lentils and faba beans, which are almost exclusively an export market for human consumption. Australia’s diverse agro-climatic zones produce a wide array of high quality pulse grains which are highly sought after globally, predominately in Asia’s sub-continent and Egypt for their high protein and nutritional content. Australia produces an average of 2.2 million tonnes of pulses annually grown over 1.8 million hectares.

Oats

Australian oats are typically utilised in local food and feed markets. Australian farmers produce many of the rolled oats brands you see on supermarket shelves every day. When local production outstrips local demand, there is a strong market for Australian oats in South East Asia.
